Socio-political involement of gypsies and efforts to establish a Romani organization in postwar Czechoslovakia.

The authors of this expert historical publication present the process of negotiation between engaged Roma and state authorities in an effort to participate in the improvement of the social status of Romani communities in Czechoslovakia from the late 1940s to the 1960s. A significant milestone that limits the topic discussed in this book is the establishment of the Union of Gypsies-Roma 1968-1969. By referring to the socio-political changes during the Prague Spring period, which contributed to the establishment of the first officially recognized Gypsy organizations in the Czechoslovakia. The publication joins the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the events of 1968. This book consists of 2 parts - the first part is consists of explanatory texts by the authors and the second part is an editorial volume containing high quality reproduction of twelve selected documents from the Czechoslovakian archives. For the period of 1949 to 1969 they documenting active efforts of the gypsies negotiate with party and state authorities. These documents are supplemented by detailed historical commentaries by the co-authors. Book contains names and local index as well as list of a pictorial material. Detailed English resumes for the explanatory and editorial part of the publication are included.
